Statement of Issue(s) and Justification:
NC 226, Development of Pest Management Strategies for Forage Alfalfa Persistence, will terminate in September, 2004. A request for a one year extension for this committee was recently denied by NCRA with the recommendation that members of the Committee consider requesting the formation of an NCT committee for two years.Forming an NCT committee would provide the mechanism to thoughtfully consider the best future for this committee in terms of appropriate objectives that would best serve the forage industry and advance the science surrounding the biology and pest management of forage crops. The current members ofNC226 would also like to consult with other colleagues to explore how the areas of functional genomics and physiology might be better employed to discover those factors which are linked with pest resistance, yield and other important agronomic properties.
The time provided by forming an NCT committee would also allow its members to carefully explore the interest of colleagues across the nation in participating in a NC or NCR committee related to aspects of pest management and alfalfa persistence.
