NCERA220: Biological Control of Arthropods and Weeds

List of Annual Meetings

Date:
Monday 06/17/13 to Monday 06/17/13
Location:
Best Western Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Rapid City, SD
Contacts:
Mary Gardiner, Matt Grieshop,
Additional Info:
This meeting is proposed to be held on June 17, 2013 at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Rapid City SD. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting. The NCERA 220 group will also sponsor a symposium on June 17, 2013 titled Shut your trap: Measuring biocontrol services which was co-organized by the chair and secretary of the group (Mary Gardiner and Matt Grieshop). Our tentative agenda for the meeting is below.

Business Meeting: Sunday June 16 from 1-5. At the last meeting we decided that instead of written state reports we would go for PP talks (5-10 minutes) that will then be posted on the new website that Brian has been developing. These will be presented as part of the business meeting and that section of the meeting will be open to the public. We specifically mentioned inviting students. Let me know if you have any questions.

NCERA 220 Symposium: Matt Grieshop and I have been working on the symposium. Originally we planned to do a symposium focused on weed biological control, however, due to a lack of available speakers we have shifted topics. Because the meeting has a heavy student attendance we thought it would be useful to talk about methods to measure biocontrol services. Currently we have three confirmed speakers and Brian as a possible speaker (he is already scheduled for 2 talks so not sure if this will overlap). We are hoping for 4-6 talks total and I think that many of the members of the working group would give a great talk as part of this session, so PLEASE let me know if you would be interested/willing to participate. In particular it would be great to get someone to talk about quantifying parasitism or the impact of weed biocontrol....or other topics just let me know!

I need to get the final symposium schedule to Kelley next week as she will be getting the meeting organized. See below for current symposium details:

Symposium Title: Shut Your Trap: Quantifying Biocontrol Services

Organizers: Matt Grieshop and Mary Gardiner

Speakers Mary Gardiner: Indicator prey to assess functional changes in altered urban greenspaces (confirmed) Matt Grieshop: Video methods to asses predator diversity-function relationships (confirmed) James Harwood: Molecular methods to build and compare predator food webs (confirmed) Brian McCornack: Marking methods to track predator movement among habitats (possible)

Other possible topics: Quantifying parasitism?? Quantifying Weed biocontrol??

The 2012 meeting of NCERA-220 will be on 4th June, during a tuesday morning breakfast meeting from 7:30-10:30 at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln Nebraska (the site of the 2012 NCB meeting). Immediately following the meeting will be the NCERA-220 sponsored symposium to continue until 12:30. The talks are roughly 25 minutes (20 min talk, 5 min questions) which will gives us time for the 5 scheduled talks (see speaker list below). The business meeting would have to go quickly with brief state reports, more focused on business related to our mutual goals. Our typical agenda items will be covered here (reports from USDA representative, Steve Yaninek, updates on Midwest Biocontrol Short Course, and plans for future meetings). Please send me additional agenda items (Oneal@iastate.edu).

I propose we have a light breakfast sponsored by NCERA-220. One thing that Mary Gardiner and I discussed is the possibility of making this more of an opening meeting such that students and others interested in biocontrol could join. A way to open this up would be to sponsor a light breakfast sufficient for a larger meeting than just the NCERA-220 state representatives. This may help attendance for the symposium and increased awareness of our group. The cost of this will be covered in part from the registration fees from the state representatives. I can cover additional costs up to ~$250.

Because this is a short a business meeting, we could have a follow-up lunch meeting after the symposium if there is still topics left to discuss (like nominating the next officers). This lunch would be more informal than the breakfast, with participants selecting a location during the meeting.

NCERA- 220 NCB Symposium Goals: The goals of this symposium are to: 1) examine current applications of technology to collect arthropod data, 2) address concerns related to the quality of volunteer-collected arthropod data, and 3) examine methods to cultivate sustainability and a sense of community within volunteer-based networks.

Speakers

Jeff Bradshaw: Building a social network around insect surveys

Amos Ziegler: Development of the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network to track and manage invasive organisms in our region

Brian McCornack: Mobile apps and web-based decision support systems thinking big on a limited budget

Mary Gardiner: Lessons from lady beetles: accuracy of citizen science data collected in the US and UK

Wendy Johnson and Brian McCornack: Use of web-based support systems to cultivate new research ideas
